Fixing a Broken Hose

Although there are many hoses in the engine compartment, there are only a few that are critical to the operation of the vehicle. Many of the hoses are pressurized hoses that are used for the transmission or other components. The two most critical hoses belong to the water pump and radiator. They are the largest and the most vulnerable because of the high pressure and heat that is constantly flowing through them.

A Boy Scout would be prepared with an extra radiator hose. But I don't think that most of us would like to fill our trunk space with extra car parts. I do recommend that on long car trips you consider carrying some of the extra parts with you. Especially if you haven't serviced your vehicle in a long time.

To get you back on the road though I would suggested a simple fix. When I say back on the road I mean to the nearest automotive shop. All you will need is a roll of high temperature silicone tape to fix the hole. Wrap a generous amount of tape around the hole. Be sure to apply some above and below the hole. There is a lot of pressure going through these hoses, so the more tape the better. But be sure to not restrict the flow of water by pinching on the hose while you are taping it. This will cause more pressure.

After you apply the tape, fill it up with water and drive it to the closest automotive shop to replace the hose. Don't let your car overheat!
